Gibraltar Airport Emissions Reduced thanks to PV90-3

Selected against strong competition and based on a combination of price and unique features, Powervamp Ltd was awarded the contract for Gibraltar Airport’s new 90 Kva mobile electric converters.

Two specially adapted trailer mounted PV90-3 frequency converters were supplied with additional 28VDC outputs. The units also featured a kWh meter to enable the airport to track electricity usage so they could accurately charge the airline accordingly for the ground power.

“[Providing ground power] offers a financial incentive for both the airport and the airline.”

Historically, a service agent would normally charge the airline for the diesel usage as well as the power consumed. However, if the airport can provide ground power, and has a way of tracking the power usage, they can charge the airline directly often at a cheaper rate compared to diesel. This offers a financial incentive for both the airport and the airline.

“Airports seeking to meet government directives to reduce their emissions can do so whilst also harnessing an additional income stream.”

The 100% electric PV90-3 converter offers zero noise and zero carbon footprint which has an obvious environmental advantage over any diesel ground power unit, helping to reduce overall airport emissions. Airports seeking to meet government directives to reduce their emissions can do so whilst also harnessing an additional income stream.

Gibraltar International Airport, or North Front Airport, is the civilian airport that serves the British overseas territory of Gibraltar. British Airways is the largest operator with nine weekly flights to London Heathrow.

Monarch also operate from Gibraltar International, with three weekly flights to London and Birmingham, as do Easyjet with seven weekly flights to London Gatwick. Last year saw the airport operate over 3400 aircraft movements with in excess of 385,200 passengers.
