Powervamp recently visited the prestigious National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh to complete the installation of their Effekta EF20 and EF5 Emergency Lighting Central Battery Systems. The installation is part of a £2 million project to provide a state-of-the-art conservation laboratory which will help enhance the storage area for the national collections.

Formed in 2006, the National Museum of Scotland merged the new Museum of Scotland, (relating to Scottish antiquities, culture and history) with the adjacent Royal Museum, (with collections covering science and technology, natural history, and world cultures). The two connected buildings stand beside each other.

Previously supplying similar systems for the museum in the past, Powervamp were the obvious choice to design, build and supply a number of bespoke lighting control distribution panels, having already established a strong partnership. Having an in-house design team enabled Powervamp to offer extra value to projects that require central battery systems and other associated systems such as the distribution panels.

The National Museum’s Collection Centre at Granton, Edinburgh provides a home for many of the objects and specimens that are not currently on display. The museum’s collections are so extensive, only a small proportion can ever be shown at once, with some exhibits last shown over 100 years ago.

Gavin Potter, Project Manager for the recent extension discussed the project commenting: “Thanks to all at Powervamp for the service provided recently at the National Museum project in Edinburgh. From tender enquiry through, to after sales service, the overall delivery of the service was first class.”

The EF20 system was rated at 3kVA whilst the EF5 was supplied at 1500VA, but both were supplied with a 3hr backup system now required by law.  The equipment was used to provide power within the new museum extension and to ensure that in the unlikely event of a mains power failure, sufficient light would be present to facilitate a safe evacuation of the building.

Powervamp Sales Manager, Kevin Evans, commented: “Having the ability to offer enhanced design services gives Powervamp the opportunity to not only keep ahead of the competition but also serves as an invaluable option for our customers” He continued, “Once again, we’ve proved that Powervamp is able to deliver on major projects”.
