The Kaman SH-2G Super Seasprite is a ship-based helicopter with anti-submarine, anti-surface threat capability, including over-the-horizon targeting. This aircraft extends and increases shipboard sensor and weapon capabilities against several types of enemy threats, including submarines of all types, surface ships, and patrol craft that may be armed with anti-ship missiles. It was originally developed for the United States Navy in 1980s.

The waterproof controls fitted to the PV90-3 make it ideal for using in all environments, including the harshest saline, and coupled with the large LCD display ensure monitoring the 400Hz output is trouble-free. The latest generation PV90-3 is fitted with the unique modular power module, so even in the unlikely event of a system failure at a critical time, the heart of the machine can be easily replaced by any member of the RNZAF in a matter of minutes, thus ensuring the Seasprite are always ready for action.

The five Seasprite helicopters of the RNZN each weigh six tonnes and have two twin General Electric T700 (1600hp) turbines. They carry a crew of three, with up to five passengers, and can be armed with a combination of torpedoes, depth charges, air to surface missiles and machine guns and have a maximum operating speed of 150kts with a range of 450 nautical miles. The Seasprite’s sophisticated radar and infrared sensors increase a frigate’s surveillance range significantly, and are invaluable for search and rescue missions, allowing contacts to be identified day or night.

The units were commissioned at the Whenuapai air base with the assistance of UK based engineers and training was conducted for RNZAF personnel on site.  A total of 8 new Seasprite Helicopters have been purchased recently for the NHF (Naval Helicopter Forces) and all aircraft are expected to be in service later this year.
